new holiday tradition: the white elephant gift exchange

The Yogi's Holiday Survival Guide

At a recent potluck, a yogi friend modeled her method for keeping holiday commercialism at a minimum. She gathered up unnecessary items throughout her house, wrapped them creatively with newspaper and recycled ribbon, and hosted a recycled-gift exchange. Participants could either keep the white elephant gift or, in the spirit of the holidays, pass it on to someone on their own recipient list. My friend, for her part, was able to clean house and share in the joy of giving.

If holiday shopping pressure makes you stressed or resentful, examine and address your reaction with yogic techniques. Create new traditions, like the white elephant exchange. Or enjoy simple rituals with your loved ones, without necessarily relying on gift giving. Think of the fruitful ways, other than shopping, to spend your time — perhaps pamper yourself with holistic healing remedies.

If, however, you do feel compelled to shop for the yogis on your list, consider these recommendations for personal and spiritual growth.

Namaste,
Andrea Kowalski
